Moving House Address Change Checklist

Following on from our Moving Into A New House Checklist, the next installment of our checklist series takes a look at where you need to change your address. Moving home involves more than just packing and unpacking and it’s important to make sure everyone who needs your new details knows where to reach you. From government departments and financial institutions to utilities, healthcare providers, and subscription services, there’s a wide range of organisations that you need to inform. This guide will help you stay organised, avoid missed communications, and make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Changing your address isn’t just about forwarding mail (although that helps). It helps to prevent you from missing any bills, receiving any penalties and reduces the chances of identity fraud. By taking a systematic approach and getting everything done as quickly as possible, you save time in the long run, avoid confusion and ensure all important communications reach you at your new home. So… where do you start?

Employment Address Change

Updating all your employment information ensures that you won’t miss out on important documents that are sent via mail. It also ensures your financial information is linked to your new address reducing the risk of any types of fraud that may occur if documents are sent to the wrong address. Most importantly, it will ensure all your data with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and National Insurance is up to date. You will also need to inform your employer for their records such as payroll, HR records and any additional benefits you receive.

Changing Your Address For Home Utilities

As if moving house isn’t expensive enough! You do have to update all your utility companies though to ensure you receive the correct bills. Gas, electric and water will need to be updated so that you are only paying for your new property. What’s worse than 1 bill?! 2 bills. You want them to know you are no longer at your old premises and that you are responsible for the new one. Your broadband, phone and TV license will also need to be updated. This can be particularly important if you work from home as you don’t want to be left without access to the internet. The Royal Mail Redirect service will ensure that any letters that are addressed to you but sent to your old address, will be diverted to your new one. Once again, this prevents risks of fraud or missing important communications by mail.

Healthcare & Education

We all know how hard it can be to find an NHS dentist that has space. That’s why it’s essential to get registered as quickly as possible with all your healthcare providers. That’s not just registering with a dentist, doctor and vet but also updating your insurance policies too. If you’ve got a family with children then you’ll need to make sure your address has been updated for enrolment to local schools.

Financial Addresses To Update

Loans, pensions, bank details, bonds and investments need to be updated with your new address. This may even include your Limited company if it’s registered at your old home address. Apart from avoiding the risk of identity theft, fraud or unauthorised access to your finances, you need to update your address to receive important and private communications. Items like a bank statement can also be used if you need a second form of identity verification in the future. If the address doesn’t match then it may stop your access to services.

Travel & Vehicle Address

Of course, you need a valid and up to date driving license with the correct insurance. If you were to have a crash, you need to ensure your insurance isn’t invalidated. If the worst were to occur, and you have an accident, you don’t want the hassle of having to explain why your address doesn’t match your insurance records. Your V5C and breakdown cover will also need to be updated. An up to date passport not only allows you to travel abroad but also provides you with one of two key pieces of photographic identification (alongside your driving license).

Other Address Updates

Updating your council tax and the electoral register need to be updated as soon as possible. The there’s the things you probably aren’t thinking of during a move. How often do you sign up for a service or club and have to input your name, address, telephone number and all the related bits? Gym memberships, subscription services and even your Amazon delivery address should all be updated. If you were to order something on next day delivery, only to find out it was delivered to your old address, it’s only going to cause additional stress.
